Lees Summit

William B. Howard founded Lee’s Summit – once called Strother – in 1865. During the town’s creation, it consisted of 11 blocks near the tracks of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. These 11 blocks are currently located in the downtown business district. Approximately 100 people resided in Lee’s Summit during its first year. In 1868, the town’s name was changed to its present name. “Summit” refers to the town’s elevation, which is the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis. A fire in 1885 destroyed nearly the entire business district. Lee’s Summit was rebuilt and continues to grow at a healthy pace. The city consists of approximately 65 square miles.

Locals sail, boat and ski on Blue Springs Lake, Lake Jacomo and Longview Lake. Lake Jacomo is located at 7,800-acre Fleming Park, the largest county park. All three lakes feature swimming beaches, full-service marinas, hiking trails and campgrounds. Bailey Park, Legacy Park and Winterset Nature Area are popular parks in Lee’s Summit. The 45-acre Bailey Park has multiple tennis courts and baseball parks. During the fall months, a large corn maze is an enjoyable highlight at Bailey Park. The 700-acre Legacy Park is equipped with baseball, softball and soccer fields. At the Winterset Nature Area, residents hike on trails located on its 10 acres. The Parks and Recreation Department offers many programs to youth and adults. These include golf, tennis, aquatics, bowling, roller hockey, basketball, volleyball and kickball. The 1,071-acre Burr Oak Woods State Forest, about 20 miles east of Kansas City, is a convenient outdoor retreat. Golfers delight in Lee’s Summit’s three public golf courses as well as the Family Golf Park, which has a miniature golf course and driving range.

A variety of shops and attractions are located in town and the surrounding area. Over 30 shopping centers are located in Lee’s Summit. The shops at the restored historic downtown and the 80,000-square-foot SummitWoods Crossing are a few of the favorite shopping areas.

Residents anticipate many annual festivals, such as the Oktoberfest and Old Tyme Days. Locals can participate in a taste of town history at several local attractions. The historic train depot, which houses the Chamber of Commerce, was built in 1905. Longview Mansion and Farm, “the world’s most beautiful farm,” was built in the early 1900s by Belgian and Sicilian workers. Powell Gardens, Old Missouri Town and Stonehaus Farms Vineyard are worthy nearby attractions. Powell Gardens, an amazing 915-acre botanical garden, is located minutes away on Highway 50. It features waterfall gardens and a mystic rock as well as a chapel, education center and conservatory. A living historical museum is located at Old Missouri Town, a farm community from the early to mid 1800s.

Longview College, Rockhurst University, University of Missouri at Kansas City, Kansas City Art Institute and Metropolitan Community College are all situated in Kansas City and the surrounding area. Lee’s Summit’s proximity to the bustling Kansas City allow residents to enjoy popular attractions such as Union Station, Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Country Club Plaza and Crown Center.
